Best Craft Beer Saskatoon: Fill Up Your Growlers This Weekend with These Microbrews

Where to fill up the best craft beer in Saskatoon

In celebration of Top of the Hops, happening this weekend at Prairieland Park, this post gives you the cream of the crop in the province’s craft brewing scene. Fill up your glass with something local! And don’t forget to visit me at the Do Sask booth to build your own pretzel necklace – good craft beer needs good craft snacks.

It’s technically spring, but the weather has been so hot it’s feeling like summer. Just as soon as the patios start bustling and the BBQs begin sizzling, people look for new ways to quench their thirst. One popular way to do that is to fill up a growler from a local microbrewer with the best craft beer in Saskatoon.

As the craft beer scene in Saskatchewan continues to grow, with each year it adds a new crop of beer lovers to the province. For example, there’s an active “Beer lovers of Saskatchewan” group on Facebook where people discuss the best (and worst) of our local brews.

Recently, a member asked where he should go to fill up his growlers for the weekend. Here’s a look at the recommendations for best craft beer in Saskatoon, as listed by active group members. I’ve also added in top-ranking brews from Saskatoon Brewery Tour attendees’ feedback.

Did I miss a good one? Get in touch with me at info@dosask.com.

Online Dating in 2018: Six of the Most Frustrating Things According to You

2018 online dating scene is a pain

Last month, Do Sask followers were asked to post their single most frustrating thing about dating in 2018. While compiling the responses, it became obvious that the most frustrating thing about dating is online datingThis post features all comments organized by recurring themes.

The term ‘online dating’ has become ubiquitous within the dating scene in general. According to an eharmony report, 36% of single Canadians have an online dating profile to increase their odds of finding a romantic relationship in person.

And according to you… online dating is kinda annoying.

What’s the most frustrating thing about online dating in 2018?

These are the biggest pains you’re currently facing in the dating scene. Keep in mind that Do Sask’s sample audience size is limited, so there may be other factors that have been left out.

1. When your group of friends is getting coupled up and there’s not a single mate left for you.

Trying to meet people outside of your immediate circle of friends and having a genuine conversation with them.”

“When you are the only single person you know in your age bracket. And none of your friends know any singles so you are always the odd one out. And vacation prices are always based on double occupancy.”

“There are very few ways of meeting people outside of dating apps and most of my single friends are gay.”

2. When your match’s online dating profile doesn’t match the person sitting across from you.

“So many people are in relationships but try to hook up with someone by putting a fake profile online. They talk to you then tell you “[oh] btw I’m married so we have to keep this on the DL”. How frustrating!”

The lies, oh god the lies!! “5’8” (as I tower over him), “athletic build” (video game couch potato build). It’s like, just be honest people.”

“How fake people can be over the internet.”

3. When unsolicited nudes arrive in your messages. C’mon, it’s 2018!

“The inappropriate pictures some men send, without warning ⚠, on dating apps!”

4. When people want to skip ahead to a quick hookup instead of developing a genuine connection.

“People wanting to “date” for the sole purpose of having sex.”

“Dating apps suck for meeting up with real people and always having to have the hookup convo.”

Finding someone that is serious about relationships and not asking if I’m DTF or if I’m interested in sleeping with younger men.”

“Meeting someone who is truly looking for a relationship.”

“I find is a lot of people want instant gratification. You’re talking to someone and showing interest and if you don’t immediately want to be their girlfriend they move on.”

5. When a combination of infinite options, unrealistic standards, and flaky partners make it hard to think long-term.

“From a male perspective…. the high expectations and constant rejection. Very frustrating.”

“The “way” to meet people but none of them fully tell the truth online…..then you “waste” time talking to them…then meet them…..then never see them again…..

“The choice paralysis of online dating. It affects both sexes, and can manifest different ways, but it’s all frustrating in the end. Everything could be going so well but then they ghost, or bench you for another option… Other times you find yourself hyper-analyzing a potential partner, wondering how many red flags are too many? Are you just being overly critical? Are you settling? Or do you actually deserve better?”

When you are excited about someone and then they ghost you. When you didn’t see it coming and are left wondering what happened. It makes it difficult to continue to open up when there is a new connection.”

“Finding people who say that they are interested then they tell you something all together different months down the road.”

6. When your desire for an old-fashioned meet-cute conflicts with your deliberate intention to be found.

“Dating sucks in your 30’s. It is scary and unnerving!! I hate meeting people online so I just don’t bother.”

“How the internet accelerated the process. Most of you can remember the not-so-distant past when relationships formed authentically. Memories are made when things aren’t rushed and I miss that.”

“It’s hard to narrow it down to one thing!! I know online dating is super popular but I really miss a good ol’ fashioned date with someone you met the old fashioned way! But I feel disconnected when I’m not on dating sites! It’s hard to meet someone that you don’t work with!! Oh the joys of dating in 2018.”

“I’d say the social dynamic of texting and messenger is annoying. I wouldn’t even mind talking on the phone these days but everybody is scared to have phone conversations.”

“The most frustrating thing about dating in 2018 is not being able to see facial expressions when online dating.”

Thanks to all the Saskatoon singles who took the time to leave their comments for this post!

10 Ways to Celebrate Canada Health Day without Getting a Physical

Celebrate Canada Health Day

Canada Health Day is today, May 12. It’s not Christmas, but taking care of your health is the best gift you’ll ever give yourself.

So what am I doing this week to celebrate? While I do make a point to check in with my doctor regularly, total health is so much more than visiting the clinic every few months. In my opinion, it’s the daily habits that truly make a difference.

Getting back to healthy habits can be way to eliminate your risk of heart failure and mental disorder. Next to cancer, heart disease is the number 2 leading cause of death (Stats Canada). And according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health issue in any given year.

Here are a ten simple ways you can celebrate Canada Health Day that don’t involve a visit to your doctor.

1. Make exercise fun again.

Remember when you’d go to the park and shoot hoops with your friends for hours on end? You’re never too old to make it happen. Saskatoon has some offbeat exercise clubs including acroyoga, aerial dance, and beach dodgeball leagues. Or go old school and call a friend to play a game of 21.

2. Start a walking, or running club.

We hardly got any colour at Color Me Rad.

I don’t know about you, but walks are always so much better when catching up with friends. It doesn’t have to be a large group to be a club – keep it small if that’s what you prefer. All that matters is that you stay accountable and meet up a certain amount of times per week/month to walk it out.

3. Round up the girls for a healthy food potluck or BBQ.

Contrary to popular belief, not every gathering has to have meat. Try to go meatless and see how creative you can be! Assign each friend a dish to bring and ask them to keep it clean. Walk the aisles around the perimeter of your nearest grocery store (fresh produce and dairy), instead of going to the aisles in the middle (preserved foods).

4. Go to a workshop to learn about meditation.

If you follow along in the Do Sask Facebook group, there are a number of activities in the city that encourage meditation. Some are free! Give it a look and if you don’t see what you’re looking for, start up your own event or group.

5. Push yourself to reach some new goals.

Setting SMART goals each week is part of adopting healthy habits. Try to keep them within arm’s reach, as lofty goals such as “lose 10 pounds in 1 week” will often leave you more discouraged and more likely to fail in the long-run. I put things like “make meal plan on Sunday” and “limit alcoholic drinks to under 5 per week” on my list of goals. These are all working towards the larger goal of feeling healthier every day.

6. Park at the last lane of the parking lot.

My husband Chris often chooses the furthest parking spot from the door. I grumble, but it’s actually a good idea to work in exercise in everyday moments like going to work and running errands. That way you’re building up your recommended 60 minutes of activity per day over the course of the entire day, not lumping it together in one hour that you may not have.

7. Bike to work!

Amy Bike Commuting to Work

I used to bike commute in Calgary every day during the spring, summer, and fall rain or shine. (I tried it in winter, but fell off my bike down an icy hill and called it quits.) 45 minutes in the morning pumped me up for a day at the office, and 45 minutes at rush hour helped me avoid traffic calmed me down on the way home. As a bike commuter, I was the most fit I’ve ever been and felt pretty good about myself.
Now that I work from home, biking is something I have to work hard to make happen. I’m looking at joining a biking group to get back at it. Friendly reminder: Bike to Work Day is May 16!

8. Go screen-free.

As a solo business owner, it is hard for me to cut out screens out cold turkey. What I’ve started doing is plugging in my phone to charge at the end of the night starting at around 9 pm, so that it’s far enough away from me that I can wind down for the evening. Some of my colleagues have chosen a day of the week to go without their phones to greater well-being. Choose whatever method that works best for you and stick to it.

9. Sign your organ donor card.

A big decision like organ donation deserves some dedicated thought. On a positive note of encouragement, one of the Humbolt Broncos crash victims, Logan Boulet, saved the lives of 6 people because of his decision to sign. Organ donations have spiked since news was shared about this tragic hero. It’s definitely worth considering.

10. Learn more about mental illness.

Different forms of mental illness affect my family members, so I have been aware of it since I was a teen. I am not ashamed to admit that I have sought help for different issues tied to mental well-being throughout my adult life. Facing your fears and learning about psychiatric disorders will put you in a good place should you or anyone close to you be diagnosed with a mental condition.

These tips for a healthy lifestyle are things I have learned over my life time. I hope they inspire you to celebrate Canada Health Day in a fun way!

As a reminder, before you ever consider changing your diet or exercise routine, always consult a physician.

Pick 10: Keep it Chill this Summer with Ice Cream Dates in Saskatoon

Confetti Cone at Chardon Ice Cream

It’s only the middle of May, but the city of Saskatoon has already seen temperatures hit close to 30 degrees. As quickly as the heat comes, so do cravings for ice cream in Saskatoon. Why not satisfy your urges for quality time with bae and something sweet at the same time? An ice cream date is just the ticket.

Now that you’re out of your winter hibernation-mode, ice cream business owners are grabbing their scoops and hitting the ground running. The choices on this list come from a mixture of personal taste, social media reviews, and some good ol’ fashioned qualitative research. I really do love my job!

Without further ado, here are my top dates for ice cream in Saskatoon:

Cover your cone in a new flavour dip!

Ice Cream in Saskatoon: Confetti Cone at Chardon Ice Cream
Photo via Amy Rederburg.

Chardon Ice Cream has an array of dipping sauces for their soft-serve ice cream. Sure they have standbys like chocolate and butterscotch, but you won’t be disappointed if you try something new. Last summer, I ordered both the toasted coconut and confetti dip flavours (on separate days, folks). Each flavour was delicious in its own way!

Where: McKercher Drive

Create a personalized, blended-fresh fro yo.

Homestead Ice Cream is a Saskatoon hard ice cream lover tradition. However, on top of wacky new flavours of hard ice cream, they also have a frozen crushed fruit machine. I like getting blueberries with yogurt, squished into a waffle cone. If you’re vegan, you can order your crushed fruit with a banana base instead.

Where to get it: Victoria Avenue

Show your taste buds some Sask pride.

Get your hands on a cup of limited edition gelato using Saskatchewan-grown ingredients. Jerry’s Food Emporium offers a range of hard ice cream flavours, real-cream soft serve, fresh-made gelatos, and other dietary-restricted treats. Try the Rider Pride flavour on game day!

2 locations: 8th Street & 51st.

Come for the ice cream, stay for the dim sum.

Like many small businesses in Saskatoon, Noodle King & Ice Cream Queen is a shop that wears many hats. Taste one of over 32 flavours of gelato while you wait to get in for authentic Asian cuisine. Or try 30 flavours of hard ice cream. Plus, they have plenty of other desserts on the menu, including bubble tea and cheesecake.

Where to get it: 2nd Avenue N

The ice cream that gives you a reason to Instagram again.

According to one of the owners of Fable Ice Cream, the young couple tasted their way across America to find the best ice cream flavours before setting up shop last year in Saskatoon. If you haven’t seen their quintessential black-napkin-sugar-cone close up on your Insta feed, you’ve likely been living under a rock.

Where to get it: 633 Avenue H S

Scoop one up at the only double-decker ice cream bus this side of London.

This one of a kind roadside attraction located across from the famous Delta Bessborough is actually an ice cream shack. Plan to make a detour at Bus Stop Refreshments after a walk along the Meewassin River Valley. They have traditional hard ice cream flavours like Tiger Tiger, but I like the pumpkin pie frozen yogurt.

Where to get it: Spadina Crescent E

Shop vintage, sip coffee, and then break for dessert.

Saskatoon small business owners come up with some interesting business concepts! Back to Coffee Beans was recently featured by Andrew, an ex-Saskatchewanderer, in  a Tourism Saskatoon video. With all the variety under one roof, it certainly looks like a fun way to spend a half-hour or so.

Where to get it: 33rd Street

Say dybosia* after an authentic Ukrainian dinner on the river.

Traditional Ukrainian culture is a strong influence in the patchwork quilt of people that make up Saskatoon. So it makes sense that an ice cream shop nestled in front of the Remai Modern Art Gallery also serves Ukrainian sausage and perogies.
*Dybosia translates to “Cheers” in Ukrainian.

Where to get it: River Landing Splash Park

While the next two ice cream in Saskatoon date spots aren’t locally owned, they are gaining hype for their shareable, elaborate shakes and desserts.

Split your West Coast Bingsoo with someone special.

Ice Cream in Saskatoon: Bingsoo from Snowy Village
Photo via Snowy Village Facebook Page.

Inspired by East Asia, Snowy Village creates frozen desserts using fresh fruit, red beans, jelly, and cereals. Top yours with a scoop of ice cream, gelato, or frozen yogurt and whipped cream.

Where to get it: Preston Avenue S

Eat the power puff of internet-viral desserts.

JusFruit is another Asia-driven menu, featuring bubble tea, fruit drinks, candy-coated milkshakes, and more. The one thing I’m hoping to get my hands on this summer is the Hong Kong-Style Ice Cream Egg Puff Waffle. That name is a mouthful. Mmm… mouthful. *drools*

Where to get it: Attridge Drive

Ice Cream in Saskatoon Honorable Mention:

Open only for special events and private functions, the Mean Green Ice Cream Machine food truck is a staple of Saskatoon summer festivals. I like the Saskatoon Berry Milkshake. Find them using the link below for live updates on their wherabouts.

Where to get it: http://snackmap.com/

You have at least 16 weeks of nice weather to enjoy each of these ice cream dates in Saskatoon. And if you finish them all and want to try something new, Do Sask has plenty of other ideas to keep your summer dates on point.
